Green-Wing Day
Once a year NMWF puts on a Green-wing day. The program
is designed for young kids to have a day out and make
a contribution to the environment. What NMWF has focused
on is making wood duck boxes, for hen wood ducks to
lay their eggs in.
Our Green-wing day takes place on the North Eastern
part of Libau marsh in a area called Whittles Point.
All the kids that come to the Green-wing day get an
opportunity to construct a wood duck box or a wren house.
The kids hammer and screw the boxes together, with the
help of the members of NMWF and the parent volunteers.
Since this takes place during February or March, the
kids have a nice warm cabin to go into to defrost and
warm up with cups of hot chocolate.
After all the boxes are made NMWF puts on a winter
BBQ to fill the kids up. The day ends with a discussion
on why making these boxes are important and how it helps
the wood duck population
Some of the boxes are put up around Netley/Libau marsh
while the others are taken home by the kids to be put
up at home in the hopes that a female wood duck will
choose their box to raise a family.
