Purple Loosestrife
What is Purple Loosestrife
Purple Loosestrife is non-native invasive species
that has lead to an overall decline in the quality
of marsh habitat by altering and replacing wildlife
habitat. The Netley/Libau Marsh contains the highest
levels of Purple Loosestrife in Manitoba.Purple loosestrife
replaces native plant species important for wildlife
and in the end reduces the biological diversity of
the marsh.
Environmentally friendly control
Members of the Netley Marsh Waterfowl Foundation in
the past number of years have grown cultures of beetles
and weevils around Netley/Libau Marsh. These insects
are the only known environmentally friendly approach
to controlling Purple Loosestrife and feed exclusively
on Purple Loosestrife.
These insects are then scattered from a plane over
an infected area or hand delivered to site of infestation.
In some areas of Manitoba the results of the insects
being released are an almost a total Purple Loosestrife.

Loosestrife Project
