Wood Duck Boxes
Wood Duck Boxes are wooden boxes which are meant for
hen wood ducks to nest in. They are placed above ground
in trees and filled with wood chips. They are meant
to simulate an old woodpecker hole, which is what wood
ducks naturally nest in.
Wood duck boxes have been put up in various areas
throughout Netley/Libau marsh. The boxes were donated
by Ducks Unlimited Canada for NMWF's annual Green-wing
day held in the late winter/early spring. The boxes
have had some success in the marsh depending on the
location. Some areas, particularly along the Red River,
north of Breezy Point, have had as high as 75% usage.
In addition to Wood Ducks, Mergansers and Buffle head
have also been known to nest in these Boxes.
