Literacy

Literacy is more than learning how to read and write. Simply put, literacy helps us make sense of the world. It is about effectively understanding and communicating messages through many forms. Because literacy is about meaning-making, all learning opportunities in Lord Selkirk School Division develop, strengthen, and enhance literacy.

Literacy enables us to understand, interpret, create, communicate and interact with ideas, others and the world around us. Literacy is critical to the success of all learners and their well-being in our communities. It is fundamental to all learning, from cradle to grave.

Reading Recovery

Reading Recovery is an effective early intervention program designed to dramatically reduce the number of children having difficulty learning to read and write in Grade One. In addition to classroom instruction, daily supplemental individual teaching by the Reading Recovery Teacher brings students to average levels of achievement in a short amount of time (approximately 12 - 20 weeks). A Reading Recovery teacher has special training to find out exactly what a child finds hard about reading and writing. The individualized lessons (30 minutes daily) are adapted to make it easy for the child to learn. Reading Recovery is designed for children who are experiencing the most difficulty in learning to read and write in the ordinary classroom without exception.
